There is no recession. It’s a made up conspiracy to make you believe you are getting a better deal.

March 8th, 2009 at 1:11 pm by Vinny

Recession? One would think that a recession would be the best time to go out and find deals on items that you’ve forcing yourself not to buy. Well, today, I finally found the perfect replacement desk for my office.

Kingston Desk

$1,800? Really? What happened to people not spending money because we are in a recession? How can overpriced stores like this continue to stay in business if people aren’t spending money? It’s all a scam! And while we’re on the subject, just because 4 pieces of wood and 2 pieces of metal originate in Denmark, really should not give “The House of Denmark” the right to charge that much money.

New York, New York

30 Rockafeller Plaza by Rob CorbettI didn’t realized how much I missed living in New York until our recent trip there for New Year’s. I was going to write a blog titled “The top 3 things that I miss most about living in the New York”, but I lost track of time.

The feeling came back and slapped me in the face the other day when I ran into an old friend of mine on Facebook. Rob Corbett, ex DJ, has developed a really nice photography website and has some stunning pictures of New York. Check out his page, Rob Corbett Photography.

In case you were wondering, the three things I miss most about New York were: All night salad bars, Pizza and Danny Tenaglia.

Nothing beats being able to leave your apartment at any hour of the night and walk to the corner to pick up whatever it is that you’re looking for. Even more, New York is the only place that seems to offer decent Salad Bars. I assumed that would be common in St. Louis, but it isn’t (Go figure);  And nothing curbs a healthy pizza addiction like being able to walk outside your apartment at any hour of the night just to pick up a couple of slices. I don’t’ care what anyone says, B&T’s pizza in St. Louis is the closest I’ve seen to decent New York pizza.

As for Danny Tenaglia, we heard him play New Year’s Day at Pacha. I was reminded a feeling of musical spirit that I haven’t felt in a very long time. Don’t get me wrong, St. Louis has caught the occasional great show or two, but they are very few and far between. I don’t know when I can remember the last time I walked into a club and have felt everyone was there just for the music.

I really miss those nights of hearing Tenaglia at the Tunnel, and the various Friday night parties being thrown at Twilo. Twilo was a legend in itself, but even with all of the international talent that walked through those doors, Tenaglia was (and is) still my favorite DJ. We were fortunate to be able to hear him play such a great set, and I can’t to go back and hear him again.

We have an awesome gallery of Tenglia photos from our visit. Check them out here. We also have fantastically wonderful video of Tengalia playing at Pacha in our video section. There’s nothing like seeing him play the air bongos on stage lights…

Incidentally, for those of you wondering, I met Rob Corbett about 13 years ago. The first time I had ever been to a nightclub was around 1996 to hear him play at the Tunnel. Those were many moons ago…

Battlestar Galactica anyone?

February 20th, 2009 at 12:47 am by Vinny
Enemies brought together by impossible longing. Enemies now joined as one. The way forward at once unthinkable, yet inevitable. And the fifth, still in shadow, will claw toward the light, hungering for redemption that will only come in the howl of terrible suffering. I can see them all. The seven, now six, self-described machines who believe themselves without sin. But in time, it is sin that will consume them. They will know enmity, bitterness, the wrenching agony of one splintering into many. And then, they will join the promised land, gathered on the wings of an angel. Not an end, but a beginning.” – Hybrid, Razor.

The more I watch the show, I can’t help but see the similarities to the story and the 2nd and 3rd Matrix films. Ellen, the mother, the Oracle, figured out the missing component for life. An Architect? Or maybe someone that was created in his image…

- Daniel, the 7th Cylon, is Gaius Baltar.

- The final 4 cylons (not ellen) were at one point Hybrids. They existed in a perfect, sub-concious state, whcih is how they are able to preceive the future as easily as the past. Part of that knowledge was released when Anders developed a blod clot in his brain.

- This would be a fun twist: What if the colonies where the final 5 originated was the realm of the original Battlestar Galactica from the 1970s?. They are both made up worlds, so maybe Ellen and her group of 4 were the link between those worlds? I first thought this when I saw the intro for the latest show. It started by saying “40 years ago”, then showed an image of the Cylons from the original Battlestar show. If ‘everything has happened before’, what if that was the preceding version?

Today I sing Democracy: The Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama

January 21st, 2009 at 2:09 pm by Jess

I am watching what they are claiming to be the biggest inauguration of presidential history. I am struck by the day; not just because a new president is being sworn in, but that we are living in a country that allows the peaceful exchanging of power from one hand to another. Not one taken by force, not one given in fear. It has been given as a gift, given in full trust that this person who has been elected will lead our people and represent our nation.

What a day! What an honor, what a hard journey ahead.

Today Barack Obama reminded us that we all have “duties to ourselves” as we go forth from this day. “We need to seize these duties gladly, because there is nothing as satisfying as grabbing a task, for this is the meaning of our liberty and our creed that every man and every woman everywhere can take joy in this oath”.

I watch in a sad sort of way, the end to one idea as a new idea is going to slowly unfold in Washington in the days and weeks and months to come. As the helicopter slowly circles up and around Washington, it signifies “out with the old ideas; in with the new”. President Obama talked about the “amount of our ambitions” and about “as much as the government can do and must do, it relies on the faith of the American people to get it done”. It was a meaningful moment, watching the Obama’s wave goodbye to the Bushes’ —waving as one does to a departing family member, all differences put aside for the moment.

The history of the nation that I live in engulfs me today as I think of other lands that are fighting to get even a glimpse of what we have here. Thanks to the countless men and women who fought and died, fought and endured hard, hopeless condition so that I may wake up in the bed of my choice. I may go to work where I choose, in the state that I want to live in, in the life that I want to be part of. Wow, what an idea! What a country to live in! I wrote this blog to remember and to remind all that “all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance”. …remembering who we are and what we have done in the past is the key to how we are going to get to the future. I am proud to be an American and even though I did not vote for Barack Obama, I am proud to be part of a system that allowed me to have a voice and to be able to speak my choice loudly. This is why the day was so exciting to me.

Elizabeth Alexander wrote a poem and had the distinct honor of reading it at the inauguration. I would love to share it with you:

Praise song for the day.

Each day we go about our business, walking past each other, catching each others’ eyes or not, about to speak or speaking. All about us is noise. All about us is noise and bramble, thorn and din, each one of our ancestors on our tongues. Someone is stitching up a hem, darning a hole in a uniform, patching a tire, repairing the things in need of repair.

Someone is trying to make music somewhere with a pair of wooden spoons on an oil drum, with cello, boom box, harmonica, voice.

A woman and her son wait for the bus.

A farmer considers the changing sky; A teacher says, “Take out your pencils. Begin.”

We encounter each other in words, words spiny or smooth, whispered or declared; words to consider, reconsider.

We cross dirt roads and highways that mark the will of someone and then others who said, “I need to see what’s on the other side; I know there’s something better down the road.”

We need to find a place where we are safe; We walk into that which we cannot yet see.

Say it plain, that many have died for this day. Sing the names of the dead who brought us here, who laid the train tracks, raised the bridges, picked the cotton and the lettuce, built brick by brick the glittering edifices they would then keep clean and work inside of.

Praise song for struggle; praise song for the day. Praise song for every hand-lettered sign; The figuring it out at kitchen tables.

Some live by “Love thy neighbor as thy self.”

Others by first do no harm, or take no more than you need.

What if the mightiest word is love, love beyond marital, filial, national. Love that casts a widening pool of light. Love with no need to preempt grievance.

In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air, anything can be made, any sentence begun.

On the brink, on the brim, on the cusp — praise song for walking forward in that light.
